Boxing is like Religion... It's Time to Spread the Word!

Boxing is like religion. 

Word of mouth is its best form of advertisement and its followers are the sport’s best promoters.  Now boxing doesn’t have a so-called bible to refer to, but its history is as strong as any sport to date.  What makes the sport so enticing is its ability to produce and endless amount of spontaneity. Within any second of a 36 minute fight, the match can end at any moment. 

Now is the time for us “followers” to endlessly promote this fascinating sport we call boxing. 

I’ve chastised boxing fans tremendously for trying to sell the sport on Floyd “Money” Mayweather.  The premise isn’t a bad one by any means, as he is easily boxing’s biggest star and his skill set is second to none at the moment.  But he does not capture the essence of what the sport is truly about.     

Boxing is passion… emotion… and challenging the depths of greatness.

What makes the sweet science such an amazing sport is the passion and emotion extracted from not only the fighters, but the fans as well.

I pride myself as a boxing purist... a throwback to the days where prize fighters were looked at as icons in many a household. The reason I write is the same reason you read... I'm a boxing fan at heart.

The biggest benefit of sharing my gift of passion for boxing in the written form,  is all the incredible sport's minds I've been able to share my opinions with.

Shawn Heimburger of "Thoughts of R.S." [http://thoughtsofrs.blogspot.com/] and I have teamed up for a monthly blog entitled "The Six Round Staredown" where we will bounce six of the most prevalent questions in the boxing world off of each other.

Boxing opinion has been an amazing byproduct of the sport and dates back to the beginning of its inception...

My Thoughts on Mike Tyson's "Undisputed Truth"

Mike Tyson is not an enigma.  Though most would make you believe that he is a bizarre individual, that could not

be further from the truth.  Mike is merely a product of an entity that has been known to seize the morality of a number of young men and women; That entity is fame.

I received Mike Tyson’s auto-biography entitled “Undisputed Truth” for Christmas this past year.  A few weeks prior, I watched his HBO Special sharing the same name, so my intrigue for the book was extremely high.  One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to read more and Tyson’s “Truth” packs in over 500 pages, making it a great start. 

Now I am a Tyson fan.  Do I think he’s the greatest heavyweight of all-time? No.  But is he the most captivating FIGHTER of all-time? Yes.

Golden Boy Promotions presents: Elite Eight Welterweight Tournament.... Why Not?

In the midst of boxing’s cold war between Golden Boy and Top Rank Promotions, each respective company holds a significant amount of the market and showcases some of the greatest fighters in the sport.

 

Golden Boy is currently dominating the 140-154lb divisions with a long list of young intriguing fighters on the cusp of some major fights and a group of solid veterans that have already made a name for themselves… and unlike Top Rank, they have the ability to work with pay-per-view king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Top Rank has the history and has shown time and time again that they regenerate their stable of fighters better than anyone else.  They don’t have the depth that Golden Boy encompasses in boxing’s most captivating divisions, but they do have Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley.  On top of that, they have some promising prospects starting out that should help solidify them in future years.

But right now it’s Golden Boy’s time and opportunity to control the boxing public. They have the fighters… they put together the best cards.  Between Showtime and Fox Sports1, they have the avenues to promote and build these young fighters up and make them household names.  The time is now and it’s vital for Golden Boy Promotions to strike while the iron is hot!
