Round 1 – I came into the card with some extremely high
expectations… and I was let down tremendously.
Round 2 – Leo Santa Cruz is a good fighter… but nothing
special. He’s too nice for my liking.
Round 3 – Alfredo Angulo walked into the ring looking “all
business” and had me expecting a war of attrition. Boy was I wrong.
Round 4 – I prepped for this fight by watching Angulo-Silva
& Angulo-Lara… and from the opening bell, that was not the same “El Perro”.
Round 5 – Angulo was beyond slow and sluggish. He literally looked like he was in slow
motion. By no means is he a fast handed
fighter, but that was almost comical.
Round 6 – I literally questioned whether or not he was
drugged prior to the fight.. or maybe his energy was depleted for trying to
make weight?
Round 7 – Canelo proved that he is a special fighter.
Round 8 – There’s no shame in taking a loss to the best
fighter of this era… and Canelo proved that he IS the future of boxing.
Round 9 – In my breakdown of the fight, I stated that both
fighters had really good power, but not lethal power. Canelo’s punches lived up to the bill… Angulo’s
did not.
Round 10 – Angulo was a MASTER of cutting the ring off
against Lara… but somehow forgot that tactic against Canelo. There were countless times in the fight where
any seasoned aggressive fighter would know to step to the right to cut off the
ring, but Angulo failed to do that EVERY time.
Round 11 – Tony Weeks definitely stopped the fight too early…
but the result was inevitable. The fight
was non-competitive and to watch Angulo continue to take a beating would have
been unjust. I don’t think that was the
right moment… but I understand.
Round 12 – Canelo is such an exciting fighter and he showed
why tonight. He threw beautiful sharp
combinations to the body and head. The
kid put on a show and even demonstrated some slick defense, albeit against a
mummy of a fighter.
