Adrien Broner: On a Path to Modesty?

It’s Mayweather week… buzz is starting to spread… fans are getting excited and the fighters are making their last second preparations.

Hidden beneath the Floyd Mayweather Jr. extravaganza is the return of the brash and never to be outspoken Adrien “The Problem” Broner (27-1, 22 KOs).  Broner’s been somewhat quiet, at least in comparison to his normal public output, and seems focused on making May 3rd a triumphant rebound from the beating he took from Marcos Maidana.

Fans of Broner want to believe that the Maidana bout was a wake-up call for the Ohio native.  It’s one thing to be confident, but Adrien Broner created a moniker of a self-centered buffoon too dumb to realize that anointment comes with achievement, not self-proclaim.

Adrien Broner can be the total package.

He will always be a villain, but possesses the skill set to be revered by the boxing world.  If the Maidana fight taught us anything about “The Problem”, it’s that the kid has a ton of heart… and that in itself makes Broner “must-watch” television.  Add in the cocky antics and flashy lifestyle… and you have the makings of a promoter’s dream; a captivating fighter.

But he must win… or else it’s all for naught.

To be humbled is to be brought down to earth.  We as people sometimes allow our dreams to live through us, instead of us living through our dreams.  If Adrien understands modesty and lets his God-given gifts do the talking, then the sky is the limit.  The kid can fight… but he doesn’t need to brawl.  The kid can box… but he doesn’t need to run.  He’s a boxer-puncher with enough power to keep you honest, but not enough to live and die by.

On Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the comeback process begins for Adrien Broner.

He’s matched up with Carlos Molina (17-1, 7 KOs) in what seems to be a showcase fight, but may be exactly what he needs.  I’m looking for signs of maturation in Broner.  His acceptance of fighting on the Mayweather-Maidana undercard was a step in the right direction.  I’m looking at his actions… not his words.

According to the man himself… he has not and will not change:

“At the end of the day, everybody is looking for Adrien Broner to be this new humble guy. Well, if you’re looking for Adrien Broner to be this new humble guy, you won’t get it. I’m still the same fresh, flashy, young, rich and famous guy. I’m a young man, and I respect every fighter, but I’m ready to fight..” – Showtime Boxing

I’m not expecting him to completely change from who he is… but I am expecting a more humble fighter INSIDE the ring.  Only time will tell, but for Adrien Broner, everything starts with his performance this Saturday.
